Rose for Summer – Blue Sky Drinking

With summer upon us my thoughts turn to the pink stuff, and plenty of it. Here are some of my favourites. From limpid, pale Provençal pinks, refreshing Sancerre to copper coloured, complex, Marsannay from Domaine Roty we have something for all tastes and occasions.

Ordering a mixed case is no problem, delivery on any 12 or more bottles is free.

Happy blue sky drinking!

Domaine Figuière Le Saint André Rosé 2018
£10.00 per bottle including VAT
Utterly classic Provençal Rosé made for drinking in the sun. But this is no insipid blushed water, it has a great pedigree and could be mistaken for brands selling for much more. Domaine Figuière’s renaissance began when it was bought by Alain Combard in the 1990s. Alain was a wine maker from Burgundy, one half of the team behind Chablis Laroche. Having sold up he felt the call of the south and new challenges and bought Figuière’s 44ha with the aim of using burgundian techniques to make the best Rosés in Provence. The Le Saint André is light pink, bursting with mouth-watering strawberry and peach flavours and finishing with a citrus twist. The (super) market is awash with generic pink plonk, ignore them, buy this instead. It is characterful, brilliant value and absolutely delicious.

Domaine Figuière Magali Rosé 2018
£13.00 per bottle including VAT
Blending Cabernet, Syrah, Cinsault & Grenache grown on a mix of Schist and clay the Magali shows more depth and concentration than Le Saint André but it is still the classic Provençal pale pink. Beautiful nose, a basket of red berries, citrus and a touch of mint. Refreshing and juicy on the palate, with a succulent, apricot like heart, pineapple and strawberry fruit and a long peachy finish with hints of dried herbs. A super wine from one of Provence’s best producers that really slakes the thirst in style.

Domaine Delaporte Sancerre Rosé 2017
£16.00 per bottle including VAT
When one visits Delaport there is a palpable sense of energy and purpose, much of it coming directly from Matthieu Delaporte, the young scion who has brought this domaine back to the very top of the Sancerre hierarchy, producing Sancerre, in all three colours, which are deeply classic yet show a precision and tension that sets them apart. He is a naturally talented winemaker, but it is his hard work in the vines that is really paying off. His Sancerre Rosé 2017 is cool and chiselled, a thirst slaking, bright wine which combines succulence with great freshness. Handpicked grapes are pressed as soon as they arrive at the winery, giving a wine which is beautiful in the glass and full of wild strawberry and tangerine fruit carried by a creamy satin-like texture and citrus infused acidity which glides over the palate. Slips down almost too easily, keep the ice bucket close to hand.

Domaine Joseph Roty Marsannay Rose 2014
£16.50 per bottle including VAT
My favourite Rosé of last year, it is tasting even better this summer! The Roty family are famous for their uncompromising wine making and approach to quality as well as their traditional techniques. “Nothing changes” could be the family motto. Joseph Roty was amongst the first people to really take notice of the quality which Marsannay could offer and was always proud of his Rosé. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, pressed quickly off its skins, this absolutely shoots down the idea Rosé can’t improve with a little bottle age. This is Rosé for the mind as well as the heart, still built around its core of wild red berry fruit, now complemented by notes of bitter orange, spice and a little savoury nuttiness and wrapped by fresh, mouthwatering acidity. With air it becomes more complex and multi-faceted, like good Burgundy should, yet it never loses its refreshing aspect or down right deliciousness.
