New vintages and discoveries from the cellars of our growers

Over the last few weeks we have been busily arranging collections from our domaines across France.

From Bordeaux we have a pair of wines from Chateau Langlet and the delicious second wine of much loved fifth growth Chateau Cantemerle. Moving south-west we have been lucky enough to secure a parcel of perfectly aged Madiran direct from Chateau d’Aydie’s cellars – do not miss this! From Burgundy, Lignier’s regional wines continue to overperform and, moving a little south, Jean-Paul Brun’s Chardonnay is as good as ever. Moving even further south there are magnums of the Méditerranée Rosé and new vintages of two old favourites, the Magali Rosé from Figuire and the the Preignes le Neuf Viognier.

Please read on to see the full selection and if there is anything I can do to help please just let me know.

White
Domaine Preignes le Neuf Viognier 2019
£8.95 per bottle inc VAT
The new vintage of our top selling house wine is a timely arrival, I have just finished my last bottle of the 2018! Happily, the 2019 is up to scratch, I was impressed when I tasted it. It has all the delicious fruit of the 2018, a slightly fuller palate and texture yet retains the super freshness that is the hallmark of this Viognier. Hello old friend, it’s good to have you back.

Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorées Beaujolais Blanc Classic 2018
£14.34 per bottle inc VAT
Another old favourite returns in a new vintage. Jean-Paul’s house overlooks this 85 year-old Chardonnay vineyard which grows on an unusual patch of limestone. This seems to give the wine extra vigour and grip, unusual for some of the whites in these parts. Unoaked and beautifully fresh, this is always such good value.

Château Langlet Blanc 2018, Graves
£14.34 per bottle inc VAT
Listed as far back as 1868, Langlet’s vineyards are well situated on a hill of deep gravel, well drained and giving wines of finesse. The 2018 is 100% Sauvignon Blanc, fermented and aged in barrel, 10% new. This gives a rich wine with tropical and citrus fruits balanced by Sauvignon’s freshness and a long lemony finish.

Domaine Hubert Lignier Aligoté 2017
£14.34 per bottle inc VAT
At its best Aligoté can produce marvellously refreshing wines which clearly transmit their limestone terroir. All the best Aligoté comes from old vine stock and these were planted in 1944. In Laurent Lignier’s skilled hands they have  produced a wine of succulent fruit and mineral freshness perfect for drinking this summer.

Domaine Francois Buisson Meursault Limozin 2017
£38.40 per bottle inc VAT
Francois Buisson produced a great range of 2017s, amongst the favourites of our tasting in January. They have now arrived, and this is my choice for drinking this summer. This vineyard, below Genevrières, was planted in 1928 and 1986. On the nose, ripe lemon, and butter. A little nutty breadth. Good weight, plenty of extract here alongside crisp acidity. Salt, a touch of smoke. Floral detail on the finish, rich yet balanced. Superb white Burgundy from one of the best domaines in Meursault.

Rosé
Domaine Figuière Magali Rosé 2019
£13.80 per bottle inc VAT
This classic Provencal rosé is a perennial favourite of ours. Blending cabernet with the classic southern grapes of syrah, grenache and cinsault it is a textbook rosé from its pale pink colour, nose of wild strawberries and refreshing crunchy fruit palate. If you like Provencal rose, you will love this, if you haven’t tried it, you should!

Domaine Figuière Méditerranée Rosé Magnums 2019
£22.70 per magnum inc VAT
This is our biggest selling rose so far this year, pale pink, full of red fruits and finishing with a touch of refreshing orange peel bitterness. A perfect quaffing Rosé – now in magnum!

Red
Domaine Figuière Méditerranée Rouge 2018
£10.75 per bottle inc VAT
Cabernet, syrah, cinsault and grenache blended to give a richly fruity wine with soft tannins and notes of dark cherry and wild herbs. Like its rosé counterpart, which has been hugely popular, this is a perfect quaffing wine for summer.

Langlet Rouge 2016
£15.45 per bottle inc VAT
Langlet’s red is a prime example of Graves terroir – the deep, free draining gravel soils are renowned for the finesse of the wines they produce. 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. I have been very impressed by the 2016s, it is a great, ripe but not hot, vintage that produced classical wines with depth and character. The Langlet Rouge shows deep black fruits, fine tannins, a velvet like texture and finishes with cool, pure fruit and a sense of cherry stone.

Château d’Aydie Madiran 2011
£19.45 per bottle inc VAT
Proving not all new arrivals are young wines! This super Madiran, made from the local grape Tannat, comes direct from the Château’s cellars. Previously the entire shipment was earmarked for a restaurant list, but we are now able to offer it more widely. 2011 was a great vintage in Madiran and this has aged brilliantly, Tannat’s famous tannins have softened to release a delicious wine with brambly fruit flavours and notes of wood smoke and rose. The palate shows the seamless, complex flavours only age can bring. A complete, contemplative wine for chilly spring evenings but with enough vigour to make a superb match with Lamb and other roasts.

Allées de Cantemerle 2015
£21.50 per bottle inc VAT
The second wine of Chateau Cantemerle. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon 40% Merlot. Made mainly from the estate’s younger vines, is made to drink earlier but otherwise is very much in the model of the Grand Vin. The 2015, combining an excellent vintage with top quality wine making, shows how good these second wines can be.

“The 2015 Allées de Cantemerle has a very refined and delineated bouquet with blackberry, crushed stone and light mint aromas – quite Pauillac in style. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a little raw at the moment but it will mesh together. There is a fine spiciness/white pepper note on the finish. What an outstanding second wine. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.”

Lignier Bourgogne Rouge Les Grand Chaliot 2018
£25.00 per bottle inc VAT
A vineyard just south of Nuit-St-George planted in 1987. The rich clay gives a deeply coloured, intense wine with stylish plum and dark cherry fruit. This is the fuller and more age worthy of Lignier’s Bourgogne, but given 2018s ripe fruit and supple structure there is no reason not to enjoy this while young.
