Cannonau di Sardegna Lillove 2019, Gabbas

“There’s no reason to overthink this ripe and vibrant Cannonau. Simply enjoy it.”
Eric Guido. February 2021

A blend of 95% Cannonau& 5% Muristellu, growing on decomposed granite soil. Fermentation takes place in steel vats at a controlled temperature of 26 ° C for around 12 to 15 days. The wine is put through malolactic fermentation and is then left to mature for a further 8 months in steel tank. Cannanou is related to Grenache, and in its silky raspberry and plum fruit one can see the resemblance. There’s a sense of purity and freshness here, nicely textured, with sweet dark fruit and a slightly wild, hedgerow aspect. Elegant and defined, I was really impressed by the balance here, the ripe fruit is perfectly judged, the acidity well integrated. This will be perfect as the nights get earlier and temperatures cool. A fine match for lighter game.

Silvia says
“My fondness for this wine not only comes from memories of the beautiful Island of Sardinia. The rustic nature of the Cannonau varietal is extremely pleasing to my palate. A good abundance of juicy fruit is always backed by a slight meaty quality that is ideal for that Sunday Roast”

“The 2019 Cannonau di Sardegna Lillove is lively and fresh, wafting up a display of strawberries, peppery herbs and sweet florals. It’s fleshy in feel with a pronounced inner sweetness, showing red and blue fruits that are well balanced by juicy acidity. Inner violet notes linger over a twang of candied citrus, making for a fully satisfying finale. There’s no reason to overthink this ripe and vibrant Cannonau. Simply enjoy it.”

About the Domaine

The cantina Gabbas was set up by Giuseppe in 1974. His wines are best known for being true examples of traditional Sardinian styles. The estate consists of 20 hectares of vines, predominantly Cannonau de Sardegna making up of 80% of their cultivation, alongside Vermentino and another local variety called Muristellu. Muristellu is a red varietal used in small amounts in blending, it gives the wines extra body and depth.

The farm sits in the Locoe valley at the foot of the Supramonte mountains, in Barbagia, the heart of Sardinia. The climate here is hot and dry but the cooling breezes from the surrounding sea and the proximity of the mountain ranges provide these hillside vineyards with protection and temperature control. The granite soils help to retain moisture, so much so that even in drought they can continue to nourish the vines. These special conditions not only provide a perfect micro-climate for the grapes to ripen but also they allow for minimal intervention; the use of pesticides and fertilizers here is very little.
