Domaine de l’ERMITAGE

Menetou-Salon

Domaine de L’Hermitage, deeply steeped in local history and dedicated to their land, show what can be achieved with passion and commitment to the highest quality.

Background

This small domaine in the heart of Menetou-Salon was created in 2003 by Laurence and Géraud de Farge. Laurence’s father Bernard was involved in setting up the Menetou-Salon appellation in 1959 and her passion for this land is obvious. With just 10 hectares of vines they know every inch of their vineyards and harvest by hand, unusual in these parts. The soils, like Sancerre, are limestone and clay, ideally suited to both Sauvignon Blanc, which makes up 80% of their vines, and Pinot Noir. Yields and quality are controlled by de-budding and careful sorting prior to vinification. The Rose is given a ‘back of the truck’ maceration, i.e. it is pressed as soon as it gets to the winery, accounting for its beautiful just-pink colour. The white and Premiere red undergo a short maceration prior to fermentation with controlled remontage and bâtonnage prior to elevage in tank. The Grand Vin red has 13 months in local oak prior to bottling. They offer exceptional quality and value.

Current Vintages

WhiteVintage
A new wine in 2017 that won a gold at the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon. It shows the hall marks of classic Loire Sauvignon on the nose combined with a palate that balances freshness with a fleshy, peachy succulence and good length. Finishes with an almost tinned peach juice character cut by refreshing pithy acidity. A thirst-quenching wine and a smart buy for the money.
2019
Grown on Kimmeridgian clay, the soil which gives the Loire Valleys best Sauvignons. Hand harvested before a strict sorting at the winery. Fermented using wild yeasts and aged on the fine lees in stainless steel before bottling. Such a classic nose, citrus and green fruits with a hint of orange. Harmonious in the mouth, the fresh acidity well balanced by white fruits and carried nicely by its texture. A complex mix of tropical and citrus fruits on the finish makes this so refreshing. Elegant, refined, a near perfect summers day white. "Domaine de l'Ermitage Menetou Salon 2017... is vital, immediately appealing, open and giving, and perfectly flavoured from the bright citrus and herb nose to the cool, stony, mouth-watering finish. It is drinking right now and you are guaranteed to be amazed at the energy and pristine freshness of this wine." Matthew Jukes Money Week September 6th 2019
2019
From vines growing in the heart of the region on Kimmeridgian clay and flint. Hand harvested and 100% destemmed before fermentation and ageing for 8 months in stainless steel.

RoseVintage
RedVintage
Made to show the character of Pinot Noir grown on the area's limestone rich soils, which give the wines a lightness and freshness which is ideal for summer drinking. Antoine makes this with as little intervention as possible, including bottling straight from the tank with very little filtration.
