Champagne PHILIPPE GONET

Les Mesnil-sur-Oger

Siblings Chantal and Pierre Gonet are 7th generation family growers in the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil.

Background

Winemaker Pierre combines modern winemaking methods and traditional techniques to bring out the best of the minerality and structure of their 20-hectare estate on the Mesnil terroir. The Gonet’s own 35 separate plots spread across eight different villages.

This is single vineyard blanc de blancs Champagne at its best, a rare gem in the world of big brand Champagne houses and is now beginning to side-line many of these famous names in the upper echelons of London restaurants.

Current Vintages

White WinesVintage
100% Chardonnay grown in the family's vineyards in Le Mesnil. Currently based on 70% wines from 2014 and 30% reserve wines. 7g/l dosage. 6 months in 600l oak barrels then four years in bottle on lees. Elegant and almost delicate on the attack before the rich, expansive mid palate gives notes of tangerine and citrus fruits alongside gingerbread on its long, layered finish.
NV
90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir from the village of Verdus. After initial blending in stainless steel the wine is then aged for three years on its lees and given 7g/l disgorgement. Pale pink with lots of red fruits on the nose, the palate is delicate and fine, showing just a touch of structure from the Pinot Noir. Tangy and juicy, the Gonet Rosé makes a great aperitif.
NV
The Belemnita takes its name from Belemnite Rostrums, the fossilised remains of long extinct squid which can be found throughout the chalk that forms the local soils. Produced in only great vintages, from the family's oldest vines, dating from 1929, in their Grand Cru sites. Fermented in stainless steel before at least six years lees aging. Bottled with 3g/l dosage, this is a wine of finesse. Complex yet focussed notes of brioche, honey and citrus fruits lead to a tight, mineral palate. A stunning champagne. "The 2004 Brut Millesime Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Belemnita is all about precision and focus. The aroma and flavors are nicely chiseled, while veins of persistent, finely knit minerality provide support. There is a lot to like in this crystalline, beautifully articulate Champagne from Gonet. The pedigree of this great Chardonnay vintage comes through in spades." Wine Advocate #203 www.robertparker.com
