Château Grand Verdus, Bordeaux Supérieur

Ex-Chateau Magnum Offer

We have dug deep in the cellars of our friends at Château Grand Verdus in Bordeaux and unearthed some ready to drink magnums from top vintages. In most cases this is the last stock they had. Quantities are low – grab some today, please don’t delay!

The Le Grix de la Salle family, owners of Château Grand Verdus for over five generations, make fine, traditional Bordeaux. Year in, year out we are always impressed by the quality to value ratio here. They are now certified sustainable and farm almost all of their vineyards organically. The estate sits on a patchwork of slopes and soils, a natural melange of terroir they prize above all else for the character and quality it brings to their wines.

As Thomas Le Grix de la Salle, winemaker explains “Our approach to wine-growing is driven by an overwhelming concern for the environment.”.

The wisdom of this dedication is obvious when one tastes the wines, from the delicious, fruit forward Grand Verdus to the more structured, classical Grand Réserve – one can plainly see the families ambition and dedication to quality. We are proud to work with them.

We have also shipped the last stocks of Château Les Ormes-Sorbet 2011, owned by the Boivert family, great friends of the Gris de la Salle’s who share their passion and commitment. This lesser known Cru Bourgeois from the Medoc is something of an insider’s secret, making wines which “transcend its peer group” according to Robert Parker*. We first tasted a bottle in the office – it was so good we took it to lunch and finished the sample. It will be ideal drinking for this Christmas and 2-3 years afterwards.

All magnums available individually. Delivery of any six magnums is free of charge.

The wines are offered at their pre-shipment prices below until the 9th of December 2020.

The Wines

Château Grand Verdus Bordeaux Supérieur

70% Merlot 20% Cabernet Sauvignon & 10% Cabernet Franc. Much beloved here at Robert Rolls, the Grand Verdus is everything one wants from a petit Château. It has bright fruit, food friendly acidity and a little fine tannin. It has the fruit for parties, while being structured enough to work at the table. It’s perfect for straightforward foods, a friend to sausages or chops. As they say at the Château – a wine for life’s simple pleasures.

2018       24 magnums available £20.00 per magnum inc VAT

Château Grand Verdus Génération Bordeaux Supérieur

55% Merlot & 45% Cabernet Franc. A wine with a high proportion of Cabernet Franc in the blend, which brings freshness and cool, minty fruit. Based on the wines made here in the past and dedicated to the generations of family wine makers. 13 months in old oak. A classical wine that perhaps allows a taste of Bordeaux past. We were very pleased to hoover up the last of the 2016 in both magnum and bottle. It was a terrific vintage in these parts.

2016      36 magnums available £32.00 per magnum inc VAT

2016      84 bottles available £15.00 per bottle inc VAT

Château Grand Verdus Grand Réserve Bordeaux Supérieur

65 % Merlot, 20 % Cabernet Franc & 15 % Cabernet Sauvignon. The Chateau’s ‘Grand Vin’ produced from their oldest vineyards on the best slopes which give terrifically low yields- around a bottle per vine! This old vine fruit gives marvellous complexity and intensity. Traditionally made and aged in oak, 55% new, for 16 months the Grand Réserve is the finest Bordeaux Supérior I can remember tasting.

2009    3 magnums available £53.00 per magnum inc VAT

2010     3 magnums available £56.50 per magnum inc VAT

2015     12 magnums available £51.00 per magnum inc VAT

Château Les Ormes-Sorbet 2011 Cru Bourgeois, Medoc

65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. Hand harvested and sorted before a gentle fermentation and 18 months in oak, of which a third is new. Les Ormes-Sorbet’s vineyards lie close to the river Gironde, on clay and gravel over limestone, the terroir responsible for the finest wines of the left bank. It is an elegant Bordeaux, perfumed and sometimes compared to a fine Margaux.

2011 Limited Stocks £28.00 per bottle inc VAT

“Proprietress Helene Boivert continues to turn out a delicious Cru Bourgeois that transcends its peer group. This lovely 2011 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with lots of sweet cassis and floral notes as well as nicely integrated wood, alcohol and tannin. It is a quintessential classic Medoc that has triumphed over the problems of this tough vintage. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. It is a sleeper of the vintage.”*
